On October 28th, 2024, Mine Vaganti NGO hosted the National Seminar of the European project Walking Bus in Sassari, Italy. The event gathered teachers and local public authorities with the goal of presenting the project, training future trainers, and planning its local implementation. Held in a dedicated conference room, the seminar provided a space for sharing expectations, ideas, and experiences, while building momentum around a shared commitment to sustainable mobility and community safety.
The session began with an introduction to MVNGO and its work in environmental education and community-based initiatives. Participants were then introduced to the Walking Bus project—its objectives, methodology, and potential impact. The concept of children walking to school in supervised, organized groups was met with great interest, especially for its health benefits, its contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions, and its potential to strengthen social cohesion.
Interactive discussions followed, during which schools shared their contexts and existing safety practices, while citizen committees explored how the Walking Bus could be integrated into ongoing local efforts. Trainers learned how to plan safe walking routes, apply basic safety protocols, and manage group dynamics along the path. Topics like the use of reflective vests, first aid procedures, and communication strategies with families were also covered in depth.
The seminar trained 20 new Walking Bus trainers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to lead walking groups safely and effectively. Although concerns were raised about ensuring consistent parental involvement, both participating schools expressed strong interest in launching the initiative. The event concluded with planning next steps, marking the beginning of a new chapter in local efforts to create safer, healthier, and more connected communities.
